One of those who have received the letter is the Komodo National Park (TN Komodo).

“Yes [sudah terima surat],” said the public relations officer of Komodo National Park to CNNIndonesia.comTuesday (20/9).

In the letter, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry asked all National Park Centers and BKSDA not to grant access to Erik Meijaard et al to research conservation activities.

In previous publications, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry considered that the writings of Erik Meijaard et al had negative indications and could discredit the government.

“Not providing services to foreign researchers and Mr. Erik Meijaard, Julie Sherman, Marc Ancrenaz, Hjalmar Kuhl and Sarge Wich in all licensing/approval matters related to conservation activities under the authority of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry,” said point 1 in the letter.

In the second point, KLHK requested that Erik Meijaard et al would not be served in working with the KLHK at the site level under the authority of the head of the UPT.

Apart from that, KLHK also asked each UPT National Park Center and BKSDA to report any proposed conservation activities by foreign researchers through NGO partners, academics, or ministry/institutional services.

“To supervise research activities that have received permits at this time, especially with regard to research results that will be used for publication in order to maintain objectivity,” reads point 5.

CNNIndonesia.com has contacted LHK Minister Siti Nurbaya, KLHK Secretary General Bambang Bambang Hendroyono, and KLHK Public Relations Nunu regarding this matter. However, the trio have not responded to text messages or calls.

Erik Meijaard is the managing director of Borneo Futures as well as a researcher who studies orangutan issues. Some of his researches include Orangutan distribution, density, abundance and impact of disturbance (2009) and Measuring orangutan killings and human-orangutan conflict in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Previously, Erik Meijaard had written an opinion in one of the media about the orangutan population in Indonesia. He criticized the Indonesian government for data on deforestation and the impact on the orangutan population.
