North Sulawesi portal – According to a study in Transplant Dialysis Nephrology, consuming more caffeine can lower the risk of death for kidney disease patients.

Researchers believe that the positive impact of caffeine is related to its vascular effects, as caffeine has been known to improve blood vessel function.

Quoted from portalsulut.minded-rakyat.com from Healthline, a team led by a doctor from Portugal, examined data from 4,863 Americans with chronic kidney disease between 1999 and 2010, as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Even after taking into account factors such as age, diet, and other illnesses, there was still a decrease in mortality.

Patients were assigned to four groups: The first group consumed the amount of caffeine in a cup of iced tea; the second has the equivalent amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee; the third is equivalent to one or two cups per day; the fourth group drank up to 1,378 mg per day (compared to drinking several cups of coffee per day).

Those in the second group had a 12 percent lower risk of death, while those in the third group had a 22 percent decrease. People who drank the most caffeine per day had a 24 percent lower risk of death.

“Advising patients with kidney disease to drink more caffeine could reduce their mortality,” says Dr. Miguel Bigotte Vieira, one of the study’s lead authors and a doctor based in Portugal.

He noted that this was an observational study, so it did not show that drinking more caffeine definitely lowered the risk of death in patients with chronic kidney disease.
